Streaming news has changed the landscape of media. It allows viewers to customize their experience. Users can share stories on social networks and receive custom notifications for trending topics. It also allows them to access content at any time.

When streaming first came on the scene, critics criticized it for lacking viewers. But this was a misconception. The major news networks saw a potential advantage to serving this audience. They invested hundreds of millions of dollars to build out their streaming operations.

Fox Nation, the streaming service of the Fox News Channel, is gaining 1.5 million subscribers. The broadcaster’s audience is willing to pay for quality content. CBS News has plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news to its streaming customers in 2022.

In 2020, the three largest news networks earned a combined profit of $3 billion. That’s a huge number, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money they make in the broadcast news business.

Streaming is expected to transform the way political news is covered. Online video streams will eliminate the binds of expensive negotiations with cable companies. This will encourage new, overtly political news operations to enter the fray. And the commercial-averse viewer might be content to just switch channels.

With the launch of NBC News Now and CNN+, the major news networks are looking to the future. They hope to deliver breaking news to viewers wherever they are. Some even want to take a share of the $3 billion in profits.
