Trending is a feature of the CNN website that talks about current news events. It also looks at what is causing the most interest in social media. Trending is often used as a break in programming when something happens that warrants the immediate attention of viewers. Depending on the urgency of the event, it can interrupt regular commercial advertising or even newscasts themselves. Breaking news coverage may last for a few minutes, or could continue for hours, or even days as the situation develops. The network will often use a graphic to announce the breaking news story, and its affiliate stations will typically insert their station identification at the top of the hour overlaid during this period. This is a similar technique to what is done in the United States by news stations during severe weather events, such as tornado warnings and hurricane watches. This type of news reporting is also known as a news flash or special report.
