Trending

A breaking news story is a topic of current interest that elicits urgent, nationwide coverage and causes many television and radio stations to interrupt their regular non-news programming or regular network newscasts. Such a report may last only a few minutes, or it can continue for hours, or even days. During sustained breaking news coverage, a news anchor will present the latest developments and analysis on-air, often with the assistance of in-studio or remote experts, via satellite, broadband (B-GAN), or phone. When such a story breaks, the networks usually alert affiliates to stand by for an interruption in their program or a countdown sequence to start the break. In the past, this type of reporting was typically reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. However, breaking news updates are a common feature of 24-hour news channels and can be delivered at any time.
