Breaking news is a special report on current events, typically on television and radio. It is often announced by a pause or countdown in the program being broadcast, with a distinctive music cue, to allow local network affiliates to join a network feed if necessary. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, programs were interrupted for breaking news only in cases of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming and run a special report. Breaking news reports may also be conveyed through tickers and lower thirds during regularly scheduled programming.
