Current News, also known as Breaking News or Late-breaking News, is a term used by broadcast television to describe programming interruptions during which an important issue has been reported. The news may be either of national or local importance.
It can last for minutes, hours or days at a time. In contrast to regular news bulletins, breaking news is reported in an immediate manner and often with little or no analysis; it does not follow a script and may be presented in real time, live video, audio, satellite (B-GAN) or via phone lines.
In the United States, breaking news coverage usually begins with an opening graphic containing music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) and then is introduced by a news anchor describing what the story is about. Depending on the nature of the story, it may be passed to a reporter in-studio or on the ground who will share more details as they become available.
If the story occurs during a network newscast, it is typically paused for a few seconds to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. Information is then disseminated by the broadcaster’s internal alert system (used by most radio stations, as well) and a lower-third graphic and voiceover announces that the program has been interrupted.
At the end of the show, the news anchor will usually inform viewers that there are more details on their local news and a full wrap-up on the network’s overnight newscast (if applicable) the next morning. Programming is then re-joined in progress or resumed at the point of interruption, depending on whether the program is new to air or has time left to complete its run.
