Some networks provide local stations with breaks from the network feed to start their evening newscasts. This break from the network feed occurs after the talent pauses for a few seconds to reset coverage. The opening graphic may be rolled again after the break. The network then disseminates the news to affiliates via an internal alert service or the station master control. Local stations will probably return to the network feed or join the “extended edition” of the show.
Breaking news often interrupts prime time television shows. This is particularly detrimental to highly rated shows and new series. When this happens, the network may choose to stop airing the program and switch back to the newscast. This decision depends on how long the news event lasted. A recent example of this would be the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. During these events, the networks will sometimes incorporate analysis to complement the news. This analysis may take place in studio, by phone, or via satellite. Broadband is also used to provide sustained coverage. Regular commercial advertising may also be suspended during these times.
