Generally speaking, current news is the information that is being broadcast on television or radio. This information is usually objective and usually comes from news agencies or other news sources. There are several types of news, including breaking news, special coverage, and soft news.
Breaking news is usually an interruption to programming, or a story that has been reported and is being aired. For example, the newscast for the local TV station may be interrupted by a major news event. This interruption may be temporary. The network may also pause to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. When the coverage has ended, the network may switch back to previous programming.
The term “breaking news” was first used to describe the news coverage of the John F. Kennedy assassination, which occurred between November 22 and 26, 1963. The news was covered by CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite.
During the early days of television news, the term was used to describe events that had a wide impact on viewers. This is why breaking news coverage often took place during commercial breaks. For example, the network may show a live shot of the anchor, and the lower thirds may be altered to convey the sense of urgency.
When breaking news is used during prime time, it can interrupt overnight and early morning programming. The local station may be given the opportunity to break away from the network feed, or it may join the network feed on an “extended edition.”
Depending on the length of coverage, the network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor until it ends. If the story is longer than 20 minutes, it may be rescheduled. For more sustained coverage, commercial advertising may be suspended.
