The headline of a newspaper is the main story. Usually the headline appears in large bold print on the centerfold. The headline is designed to catch the attention of potential buyers. The term ‘breaking news’ has become redundant due to 24-hour news channels. Breaking news is used to describe the most significant story of the moment, and can be a story that is of wide interest to viewers. The term ‘breaking news’ may be used in lieu of the phrase “just in.”
In the case of breaking news, a local or network station may continue to show the live shot of the anchor as well as the video of the breaking event. In rare instances, the network may cut away to show the full wrap-up of the story. Regular daytime and late-night programming may also be interrupted or rejoined in progress. The recent transition to digital television has increased viewing options for the general public. Daytime syndicated programs may be moved to an auxiliary digital subchannel that airs in conjunction with the main signal.
Breaking news on prime-time television may also interrupt prime-time programming, particularly highly-rated shows with little or no time to air. One example is the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike, which interrupted an episode of Scandal. Local stations may also be given the opportunity to break away from the network feed during the evening newscast. If they are given this opportunity, they will typically join the network-fed show on a later, “extended edition.”
