Streaming news has a long history, starting back in the 1980s with Ted Turner’s Cable News Network. He had little experience in the news business, but decided to enter it.

The network employed more journalists than any television news operation in the United States. It spawned MSNBC and then Fox News Channel.

For years, news on cable lived in a linear time frame, with viewers waiting for the news wheel to turn to access the latest headlines. Print newspapers were stuck in time, and radio only reported yesterday’s news.

With the advent of DVRs, viewers could time-shift. They could watch their favorite show at a later time. This made it possible for people to watch news they preferred. The result was that the news was often partisan. People avoided news that challenged their beliefs.

In the early years, cable’s news business was a profitable one. But as the media landscape shifted, broadcast news began to lose audience. Cable news networks spotted a technological advantage in serving the streaming audience. The networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. They scheduled regular nightly news programs. The networks also created documentaries and reruns.

In addition to regular nightly news programs, the major streaming networks also offer news analysis and documentaries. They have been a force in the business for ten years. And they have proven that niche audiences will pay for the content.

One of the major streaming networks, Fox, has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. Fox has also been the subject of criticism, with a 2005 Princeton University study finding that its news coverage is overtly political.
