Historically, broadcast news has been a profitable business. But today, it is being repurposed by the major streaming networks. They are chasing the breaking news and re-purposing cable programming to suit their streaming audience.

In addition to breaking news, major streaming networks offer documentaries and analysis. They also schedule regular nightly news programs.

Unlike conventional TV, streaming news can be watched on virtually any device. In fact, viewers spend more time watching a streaming program than they do watching broadcast TV. In addition, streaming is economical because it allows for building libraries of news content.

In a recent survey of news consumers, more than 85 percent subscribed to at least one streaming service. This is a number that is expected to continue to rise as more and more people switch to streaming.

Streaming will help news networks attract a mass audience, while also serving niche audiences. It will also allow networks to archive and archived content. This means they can serve an audience where they are.

One of the major streaming networks, NBC, claims that it gets 100 million video views a month. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the streaming operation.

Another major network, CBS, is aggressively pursuing local streaming news. They intend to beam 45,000 hours of local news by 2022. They will partner with local media outlets and publishers to increase coverage and geographic reach.

The free news streamers are promoting cable quality news, while also promoting a cut-rate cable subscription. They are essentially telling viewers that they can ditch their cable subscription and cut out the cord.
