Trending is a breaking news report used in television broadcasts to alert viewers of events that are currently occurring and that require immediate attention. The term is also used in radio newscasts, particularly those of national network affiliates. Such reports are often interrupted from non-news programming, with a special opening graphic and distinctive music cue to mark the breaking story, which will usually be followed by a news anchor who welcomes viewers and introduces the topic at hand. In the past, these breaks were reserved for events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or major severe weather events, and were sometimes accompanied by a newsflash or alert crawl during regular programming.
