Streaming news has emerged as a new way to consume news. This type of media is not limited by cable TV licenses and it is accessible wherever the viewer may go. Streaming news reduces the scarcity in the media equation and lets viewers customize their experience.

In the past, broadcast and cable news have been profitable business models. However, in the era of streaming news, commercial-averse viewers can opt out of paying for television and switch to free news streams. With a multiplicity of choices, audiences could become polarized.

As the audience became more mobile, networks saw a growing demand for streaming news. They repurposed existing programming and offered reruns. They also offered news analysis and documentaries.

Streaming news is gaining traction in political news coverage. According to a recent study, Americans spend more time watching streaming programming than broadcast TV. Streaming news likely will reshape political coverage. It will not be bound by costly negotiations with cable companies.

Unlike the broadcast news of decades past, a streamer’s coverage can last hours, days or weeks. This is a big advantage because it allows for timely delivery of news. When an event breaks, a reporter at the location can report additional information as it unfolds.

A special report is a format commonly used to deliver breaking news. It usually includes an internal alert service that disseminates information to reporters and stations.

Networks will typically pause and allow affiliates to join the stream. At the end of the story, the network can return to previous programming or begin new coverage. If the coverage is sustained, the regular commercial advertising may be suspended.
