Streaming news is changing the way we consume television news. By allowing viewers to watch on their schedule, streaming makes video news more ubiquitous. It also allows networks to archive content and deliver news on demand.
Major news networks have spent hundreds of millions of dollars building streaming operations. Streaming provides news analysis, reruns, and documentaries. They also schedule regular nightly news programs. These programs are longer than their broadcast counterparts. They are also more inclined to tell stories.
Major news networks are still hoping that streaming will bring in an audience large enough to sustain them. They have repurposed programming from their broadcast operations.
For example, CBS partnered with a local affiliate in Pittsburgh. They piped coverage of the bridge collapse to streamers. They also picked up local coverage of the Sacramento shooting.
Fox is also in the news streaming business. It has gained 1.5 million subscribers for its Fox Nation streaming app. This shows that TV audiences will pay for content.
In addition, Fox owns multiple cable news channels. That means viewers have a choice of channels, and they may be content to switch to another channel. However, this multiplicity of options could make the audience polarized.
On the other hand, free news streamers are trying to promote cable quality news. These companies resemble cable in style and approach. Their goal is to convince viewers that they can cut cable, and instead, subscribe to their streaming services. They would like to earn a percentage of the $3 billion profit that the three major news networks expect to make in 2020.
