TV news has lived on cable and the airwaves for decades, but with the rise of streaming services, it is now possible for viewers to get the information they want when they want it. It is easy to see why some networks see an opportunity to serve this audience, and others have jumped into the streaming game.
News streams can be categorized into two main groups. Breaking news and special reports. Breaking news describes a story that breaks quickly, while special reports are more substantive and are usually used for stories that have a broad appeal.
When an important story breaks, the network may interrupt its regular daytime or late night programming to join in the coverage. A local station can also break away from the network feed and start its own evening newscast. However, most stations would probably return to the feed after the event has ended.
Many 24-hour news channels have a live anchor who can address breaking news. Depending on the length of the coverage, regular commercial advertising may be suspended. Networks will also integrate their own analysis into the coverage.
Local television stations don’t provide reverse countdowns, but they often remind viewers that full coverage will be on their local news. They may even cut to video of the breaking story.
In addition to breaking news, many networks offer reruns of their programs. Some offer documentaries and news analysis. Others feature a variety of topics, such as space and astronomy news.
