When a news event occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming, or even the regular daily network newscast (before the existence of 24-hour news networks, such breaking events were often called “Newsflash” or “Special Report”), an alert graphic with a distinctive music cue appears, indicating to viewers that the regular program is paused and a Breaking News segment will follow. The national network feed is usually interrupted, as well, to allow affiliated stations to switch to the breaking news stream. In some cases, lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey the sense of urgency.
