TV news has been a lucrative business for decades. However, the advent of cable and streaming news has changed the game.
Streaming allows viewers to watch any time they want. In addition, it also allows for timely delivery of news. By repurposing content from broadcast and cable, major streaming networks have created a new way to view news.
Some of the biggest names in media have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. Those efforts have produced results, however, and the news networks are hopeful.
During the first year of the streaming craze, CNN’s critics were quick to point out the absence of viewers. The cable news network was founded by Ted Turner, a former television producer with little journalism experience.
However, a recent study found that streaming news was more popular than traditional TV. Indeed, a significant portion of Americans spent more time watching streamed programming than they did watching traditional broadcasts.
Newsy, Newsmax, Cheddar, and Al Jazeera have all planted flags in the streaming frontier. Each one of these outlets has produced a product that is likely to reshape the way political news is delivered.
CBS is investing in local streaming news. Its strategy includes beaming up to 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
Likewise, Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers for its Fox Nation app. This app is a streaming news aggregator that offers viewers a customizable experience.
As for the other major streamed news outlets, they have also made their mark. NBC News Now, for example, has generated 31 million hours of content per month. These networks all schedule regular nightly news programs. They also offer documentaries and reruns.
