In television and radio news coverage, breaking news is an event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming or a previously scheduled newscast. It may also refer to a story of a particularly urgent nature, such as severe weather or a significant traffic accident, that requires immediate reporting on air. In addition to the standard broadcasters’ alert crawls, breaking news is typically highlighted with a newsflash graphic or a special report ticker overlaid on lower thirds, and can be interrupted with a countdown sequence. Often, network affiliates will insert their own station identification during a break in national programming, as well.
