Television news has been on the airwaves for decades, but it isn’t going away any time soon. But a new trend is emerging that is set to change how we get our news. Online video streaming is expected to alter the way political and news coverage is presented to the public.

It all started with CNN. In 1980, Ted Turner launched a cable news network. That was the first of several new television channels, including MSNBC and the Fox News Channel.

Initially, critics scoffed at the new cable channel for failing to draw viewers. Yet, a fast-growing audience for streaming news is now making the competition more intense.

Streaming allows a viewer to customize his or her experience, and it travels wherever they are. Using a smartphone, tablet, or computer, a streamer can access a wide variety of programming, from local news to documentaries.

This has enabled major news networks to enter the streaming business. CBS, NBC, and ABC have all invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the operation. These networks have created documentaries, reruns, and analysis programs, and they’ve repurposed some of their broadcast programming.

Some of these services are also free. The free news streamers want to make a profit from their operations. They are essentially telling viewers they can cut their subscriptions to cable and get their news on demand.

One popular free news streamer is NewsBreak. According to its website, it is the “#1 local news app,” providing users with “local, live and breaking news.” Users can express their opinions, block topics, and follow trending topics.
