The term “breaking news” usually refers to a significant, time-sensitive event that warrants an interruption of non-news programming, or, in the case of network newscasts, the pause of a regular program so that station affiliates can switch to the network’s feed and begin live reporting. This is most often seen for severe weather events, but can also be triggered by other urgent news, such as the assassination of a president, and occasionally by political events such as the election of a new leader. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to provide Special Report tickers for selected breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, reducing the need for cut-ins.
