Breaking news is an urgent report about an event of significant or immediate importance that necessitates the interruption of normal television or radio programming. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were rare, reserved for extremely severe, national events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or the threat of a natural disaster that could affect large areas or cause widespread panic. Breaking news is often accompanied by a special graphic, and station identification in a lower third to indicate that the current program is being interrupted for a breaking news story.
