Breaking news is current events of significant significance that elicit immediate, urgent coverage by broadcasters. These are often considered more important than long-form news stories, and may elicit programming interruptions or “cut-ins” from network or local stations. When a breaking story is identified, networks will notify their affiliates to “stand by” for an interruption of normal programming. A newsflash or special report graphic will appear on the screen, followed by a news anchor and live reporting. In some cases, lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey urgency. Breaking news is more common on 24-hour news channels, which can interrupt regular programming at any time.
