If a news story is so urgent that it requires an interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to break the story to viewers, this is commonly known as “breaking news.” This type of interruption is commonplace on 24-hour news networks, where an anchor can be interrupted live for the purposes of reporting breaking news, as opposed to the more traditional interruptible cut-ins used by regular television and radio stations. The breaking news report may last for only a few minutes, or continue for hours or days. Network affiliates typically insert their station identification into the top of the hour overlaid during a breaking news story.
