Breaking news is an urgent and important current story that warrants an immediate interruption of normal non-news programming, or, at 24-hour news networks, regular live broadcasts. Typically, the network feed will stop at the time of an event that is considered to be breaking and a countdown graphic will appear on the screen, with a special music cue. Then, a news anchor will introduce the story and begin reporting on it. Depending on the importance of the story, lower thirds and other graphics may be modified to convey urgency. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news channels, breaking news events were usually covered using cut-ins on regularly scheduled programs and newscasts.
