When an event occurs that warrants interruption of non-news programming, or in the case of some national network newscasts, regularly scheduled coverage, to report on it, a special breaking news report is used. These reports are often accompanied by a special graphic and countdown sequence, and may also feature a distinctive music cue. They can last for a short period of time, or longer, such as during the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy. Previously, such interruptive reporting was rare; prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, stations would only interrupt regular programming for exceptionally urgent events such as tornado warnings or major natural disasters. During breaking news coverage, network affiliates may use lower thirds or other graphics to promote their stations in the local market.
