Breaking news is a term for news events which elicit such urgency that national networks interrupt regular non-news programming, or, in the case of 24-hour network news channels, regularly scheduled programs and use a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the network feed. Such coverage may last for a few minutes, or it may continue for days. Depending on the event, the network may provide analysis through in-studio analysts.
