A news event of a sufficient magnitude or urgency that a major television or radio station interrupts its regular non-news programming to provide live coverage. This is often referred to as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” Before 24-hour news channels, such events typically interrupted network newscasts in progress, and the broadcaster would send a special signal to its affiliates telling them to stand by for an interruption. This would usually be accompanied by a countdown and an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. Today, such breaks are commonplace on cable and satellite news channels and on most national network news programs. However, on radio stations, cut-ins are more common during severe weather events and may also use lower third graphics for breaking stories of interest.
