Often referred to as “newsflash,” “Special report” or simply “breaking news,” when an event occurs that requires the immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, television or radio stations typically run a special report devoted to the story. The break may last for only a few minutes, or several hours or days, depending on the importance of the breaking news. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, interruptions to regular programming were usually reserved for extremely serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, for which national networks ran special coverage on all affiliates and interrupted regular programming across the country.
