Breaking News is live news coverage that interrupts regular television or radio programming and sometimes carries on for several hours or even days. When an event elicits such a level of urgency, that it warrants interruption to non-news programming, a network will send out a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” alert and countdown sequence on their affiliate feeds, urging affiliates to switch over to the breaking news coverage. The resulting coverage often incorporates analysis from in-studio reporters or field correspondents and may use lower third graphics with altered audio to convey urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such reporting was largely limited to extremely urgent events that required multiple stations to interrupt their programming. These include natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and presidential assassinations.
