A breaking news story is a significant event in a timely manner that a broadcast network or a television or radio station interrupts regular programming to cover. Breaking news usually includes an opening graphic, a special music cue and lower thirds that are changed to convey urgency, with the news anchor introducing the story and telling viewers why it is being interrupted. Depending on the severity of the event, a break may last only a few minutes, or it may be extended for multiple hours or days. Breaking news stories are also referred to as newsflashes or special reports. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were generally reserved for the most urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
