Often when breaking news occurs, network television and radio stations will interrupt their non-news programming or regularly scheduled newscasts to provide live coverage. This is commonly known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” They may use lower thirds and other graphics to signal the change in programming. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of programming interruption was only reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted widespread nationwide coverage and required multiple stations to suspend regular broadcasts for the duration of the event.
