Trending is a short-form news report often used on broadcast television. The report is used to highlight stories that are getting significant viewer attention, or have the potential to elicit an emotional response from viewers. Trending is typically accompanied by a dramatic image and distinctive music cue. It is often used as a replacement for the traditional “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic, and may be referred to as “breaking news” on some websites. When breaking news occurs, network affiliates may interrupt regular programming for the report, or may choose to insert a lower third with a countdown sequence. The trending graphic is also commonly used during national network newscasts.
