About Trending

Breaking news, also known as a special report or a newsflash, is a segment of a television or radio program that is interrupted to cover an urgent, developing story. In North America, breaking news is typically accompanied by a network alert and countdown sequence that tells affiliated stations to interrupt their regular programming and switch to the network feed to receive the latest developments. Breaking news segments may be limited to a few minutes or run for hours or even days, depending on the importance of the story. Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, such programming interruptions were usually reserved for extremely significant events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a major natural disaster such as a hurricane.
