Trending is a category of news stories on a television or radio station that receives more viewer interest than other stories at a given time. Generally, trending topics are considered to be of immediate importance and may require an interruption in regular non-news programming (or occasionally, regularly scheduled newscasts). When a story is breaking, it will often be accompanied by a special graphic on the screen with a distinctive music cue. This type of breaking news is called a “Newsflash” or “Special report”. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of breaking news was reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their normal programming for live coverage. Today, most major television networks use a ticker for breaking news stories during their regular programming, which lessens the need for a cut-in during non-news programming.
