In news broadcasting, breaking news is a report on an urgent event that warrants immediate coverage. It is normally a national story that requires a number of stations to interrupt their non-news programming for live reporting and analysis. Breaking news is often accompanied by a special opening graphic or distinctive music cue, and station identification is overlaid during the report. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, stations were generally only interrupted for severe weather and major news events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. A breaking news ticker is also often used during regularly scheduled newscasts, lessening the need for cut-ins and alert crawls.
