The current situation of television news isn’t looking good for newscasters. With more viewers choosing to watch streaming TV and movies, the market for broadcast news is in a downward spiral. According to Nielsen, cable and satellite TV subscriptions will decrease by 20 percent by 2021, and the share of Americans watching cable will drop from 76 percent to 56 percent. Moreover, 85 percent of households have access to at least one streaming service.

In addition to broadcast and cable TV, free streaming news channels have emerged. These free news sites try to compete with traditional cable and broadcast companies by adopting their approach and style. These free streaming services are essentially telling viewers that they can cut their cable subscription and watch the same quality of news as cable. However, they fail to recognize that free is not necessarily better than paid content. So, how do they succeed? Let’s look at the history of news-streaming.

Major broadcast news networks like ABC and CBS are also exploring streaming news services. They’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. However, most of them have been cautious not to overhype streaming. NBC News Now is the best known example of a free streaming service. It produces 10 hours of news and boasts that it has more than 31 million monthly video views. These streaming services have a lower barrier of entry than cable TV, but are a viable alternative to cable TV.
