Trending is a news-based section on the website of Current News that talks about the most popular stories. Typically, the top story will be shown on the screen with a large graphic, with a distinctive music cue. Then, the story will be accompanied by an anchorperson announcing the report. A countdown is often displayed, allowing network affiliates to join the feed. Depending on the severity of the event, non-news programming may be interrupted for the report. Also known as a Newsflash or Special Report, this type of interrupt is usually reserved for major events that require nationwide coverage. Before 24-hour news networks, this type of break was limited to highly urgent breaking stories such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
