When a news event happens that warrants breaking the regular programming of television and radio stations to provide immediate coverage, the station will normally pause their normal program or interrupt a regularly scheduled network newscast with a special graphic, indicating that there is a major story to break. This is called a newsflash or special report, and was commonplace before 24-hour news networks existed, when national events would elicit nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to stop their programs or interrupt a regular newscast to cover the developing situation. In recent years, news channels have used special reports with lower third tickers to communicate breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
