A breaking news event is an item that requires the interruption of regular programming to cover immediately. Breaking news items can range from a major national event, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, to a local event, such as a severe weather event. When breaking news occurs, stations usually halt their regular programming and interrupt their network feed with a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic that announces the break. This may be preceded by a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue. Lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey urgency.
