In broadcasting, Breaking News is a news story that requires immediate and sustained coverage of an event such as a natural disaster or other catastrophe, or a significant development in a ongoing investigation. Such an event often warrants the interruption of regular programming, and often prompts network affiliates to run a special Breaking News ticker during their local newscasts, a practice known as “newsflash” or a “Special report”. In the days before 24-hour news networks, breaking news was more commonly interrupted by stations on a regular schedule, requiring cut-ins for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
