When a breaking news event occurs, the current non-news program is interrupted by a news anchor (or “Newsflash” or “Special Report”). In the past, break-ins were only used for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and were rare on stations that did not carry 24-hour news networks. Depending on the importance of the story, station imaging promos may be replaced with a special graphic and countdown sequence to inform viewers of the interruption.
