Trending is a feature on Current News that talks about what’s happening right now.
Breaking news is a breaking news event that requires an interruption of non-news programming on television or radio (or, in the case of network broadcasters, their regularly scheduled network newscasts). The network feed will usually switch to a countdown sequence, giving affiliated stations a chance to join the feed. In the past, breaking news events of national importance—such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy—could elicit an interruptible newsflash and even full-on special report from the major networks, but these breaks are now uncommon. The newsflash or special report will often include a graphic with a distinctive music cue and lower thirds that convey urgency.
