Trending is a news segment that talks about the latest topics in the headlines. The term “trending” refers to the current popularity of a particular topic in the news, and is usually accompanied by a graphic that allows viewers to vote on which story they want to hear more about. The segment can also be referred to as Breaking News, Newsflash or Special Report. Historically, breaking news was covered through interruptions of non-news programming, or, prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, network television affiliates would interrupt their regular, regularly scheduled newscasts for breaking news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
