Trending is a feature on Current News that talks about stories that are trending in the media. When a breaking story occurs that warrants an immediate interruption of regular programming, the network usually alerts its affiliate stations to stand by and switch over to the national feed, which will often contain a graphic that reads “NEWSFLASH” or “SPECIAL REPORT.” In the days before 24-hour news channels, such breaks would be restricted to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Alternatively, station imaging promos or alert crawls could be used to interrupt regular programming during a severe weather event.
