Breaking news is a type of television and radio news coverage that covers immediate, ongoing events which demand urgent attention. In North America, the term is most commonly associated with breaking weather events, but can also be applied to any event that warrants a sudden interruption of current non-news programming (or, before 24-hour news networks existed, regular network newscasts). When an event occurs which demands immediate attention, a news station will interrupt its programming, alerting its affiliate stations to stand by while the network broadcasts a special report. The opening graphic and music cue for this report are often designed to convey a sense of urgency, using lower thirds or other graphics to reinforce the message.
