Breaking news is the coverage of urgent events that require immediate attention from television and radio broadcasters. When breaking news occurs, a national network’s regular non-news program is interrupted with a countdown graphic to alert affiliate stations to prepare to switch over to the network feed, often with a distinctive music cue to distinguish it from regular commercial programming. Alternatively, a “Newsflash” or “Special report” ticker may be inserted into the middle of regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins. The same is sometimes done for severe weather events.
