When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an interruption in regular non-news programming (or, in the case of nationally network newscasts, the current ongoing newscast), a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker graphic appears over the top of the screen, and a countdown begins. When the countdown completes, the newscast halts for the break, which is often followed by a brief montage of photographs or other relevant images. Depending on the nature of the breaking news event, it may take only a few minutes to cover, or it may be required to continue for hours or even days. This is commonly seen with severe weather events.
