When a major news event breaks, the network interrupts regular programming or, in the case of an ongoing newscast, stops it completely and alerts viewers to stand by. An opening graphic, usually with a distinctive music cue, is shown, and an anchor introduces the story. Often, the breaking news report requires a special segment in-studio and/or live cut-ins from remote locations, depending on the severity of the situation. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, cutting-ins were more common for severe weather events or stories that required national coverage (such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy). Breaking news is also referred to as Newsflash, Special report or Breaking news.
