A breaking news report is an update of a current event that interrupts non-news programming on a national network or local television station. It is usually accompanied by an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue. Breaking news reports can last for a short period of time, or continue for hours and even days, if the event is of extreme significance. Until the rise of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to interrupt their programming.
