When a news event occurs that is so significant that it must interrupt current non-news programming, or occasionally a regularly scheduled newscast, the broadcaster will typically notify its network affiliates to stand by for an interruption. The network feed will then pause and begin a countdown sequence for stations to switch to the breaking news report. The report will then begin with a graphic and a distinctive music cue. This is often called a “Newsflash” or “Special report,” and it may use an altered lower third or other graphic to convey urgency. Breaking news was traditionally restricted to severe weather events that required the immediate attention of viewers, but it has become common on 24-hour news channels that have a live anchor available for breaking news coverage at any time.
