Whenever a significant event occurs that warrants the immediate interruption of regular programming, a national network newscast will typically go to a special “breaking news” report. These may be presented by a news anchor in studio, or via satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means, depending on the severity of the story. At times, the network will also integrate analysis about the story through analysts in-studio or remotely. In the case of a breaking news report that will last for an extended period of time, the network will usually ask its affiliates to insert their station identification overlaid on top of the network feed, rather than through a standard station imaging promo or program reminder.
